A 36-year-old British woman died in North Bimini on Tuesday after a strong ocean current separated her from her two sons during a family snorkeling trip. The Royal Bahamas Police Force confirmed the incident and opened an investigation into the circumstances of her death.
Police stated that the woman was swimming near the southern point of North Bimini with her husband and children when the current pulled both boys away. As she tried to reach them, the water also swept her from the group. The two boys were eventually recovered from the water safely.
Officers at the Alice Town police station received a report shortly after 10:00 a.m. that a woman was unresponsive at the North Bimini ferry dock. By the time responders arrived, the woman had already been transferred to a local clinic for medical attention. A doctor at the facility pronounced her dead despite resuscitation efforts.
The police statement indicated that CPR was administered at the ferry dock after the woman was pulled from the sea. Investigators said foul play was not suspected in the preliminary review of the case. An autopsy is scheduled to determine the exact cause of death.
The UK’s Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office confirmed it is monitoring the situation. A spokesperson stated that officials are in contact with local authorities to assist the family. The ministry expressed its condolences to the relatives of the deceased.
North Bimini is part of a small island chain located between Andros and Miami. The area is the closest point in the Bahamas to the US mainland and serves as a major travel hub for visitors entering the country.
