The Royal Bahamas Police Force opened an investigation into the sudden death of a 36-year-old British woman on Tuesday. Officers on the island of Bimini responded to reports of an unresponsive woman at the North Bimini Ferry Dock shortly after 10am.

Police stated that the woman, who is believed to be from Stapleford in Nottinghamshire, was snorkeling with her husband and two sons near the southern point of the island. A strong current reportedly swept both children away. As she attempted to reach them, the woman was also carried off by the water. The boys were later rescued.

According to a statement from the force, officers at the Alice Town police station were notified of the incident. The woman had already been transported to the local clinic for medical attention. A doctor there pronounced her dead despite efforts to save her life. Police confirmed that CPR was administered at the ferry dock after she was pulled from the water.

The force indicated that foul play is not suspected at this time. An autopsy is scheduled to establish the exact cause of death. A Foreign Office spokesperson confirmed that officials are in contact with local authorities and providing support to the family.

The spokesperson added that their thoughts are with the family of the British woman who has died in the Bahamas.
