Tesla has cancelled Cybertruck plans for Australia and New Zealand and is returning deposits to reservation holders who have waited since November 2019. Emails informing customers their orders are void began going out on 23 October.
The Australian reservation required an A$150 deposit. The cancellation email, shared by customers on Reddit and social media, states: "After careful consideration, plans to produce Cybertruck for Australia and New Zealand have been discontinued." Tesla said it is "unable to fulfil your reservation and it will be cancelled." Full refunds will be processed within 30 days, and customers who instead order a Model 3 or Model Y are offered a one-year FSD (Supervised) subscription.
A crowdsourced survey in 2020 ranked Australia third among Cybertruck reservation markets, behind the United States and Canada, at about 3% of the total. Tesla never released regional figures. Crowdsourced tracking put total reservations at roughly 2 million by 2023. Tesla closed the Australian reservation page in May 2022, replacing it with a "Get updates" button, without issuing refunds at that point.
The Cybertruck is built only in left-hand drive, while Australia, New Zealand, the UK and Japan require right-hand drive. Australia also requires certification under its own design rules. Tesla's international rollout has been limited to left-hand-drive countries: deliveries began in South Korea in late 2025 and in the UAE in January, with configurators later appearing in Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Jordan and Israel. The truck remains unavailable in the EU, held up mainly over pedestrian safety requirements.
In 2024, Tesla shipped a Cybertruck to Australia for a display tour, and Elon Musk told shareholders: "We might be able to certify it for other markets sometime next year." No right-hand-drive version followed. In the third quarter of 2026, Tesla delivered 8,295 "Other Models," a category now made up almost entirely of Cybertruck since Model S and Model X production ended. Tesla's production line is built for 250,000 units annually. Australia and New Zealand together have about 33 million people.
The cancellation emails arrived one day after Tesla reported its third-quarter 2026 earnings.
