Tesla now claims 1.74 million active Full Self-Driving subscriptions, a figure that jumps 67% from last year. This number includes owners who paid for the software upfront, not just those paying monthly.

The company’s Q3 2026 shareholder letter details this counting method. It states the metric follows the 2025 CEO Performance Award rules. This award requires 10 million active FSD subscriptions for Elon Musk to earn part of his pay. By including upfront buyers, Tesla boosts its count significantly. Many of these early adopters paid as much as $15,000 for unsupervised self-driving features that have not yet been delivered.

Tesla stopped selling FSD as a one-time purchase on February 14, 2026. New customers now pay $99 monthly in the US. However, anyone who bought it before that date remains in the active count as long as their car is operational. Only free trials are excluded from this total. In April, Tesla reported 1.28 million under the same definition. Six months later, it still has not disclosed how many of the 1.74 million actually pay each month.

The letter also notes a 75% attach rate for new North American deliveries in Q3. This represents a nearly twenty percentage point increase from the previous quarter. Tesla believes FSD is driving demand in available markets. However, the company does not define if this includes introductory offers or how many buyers continue paying after the initial period.

Musk’s compensation package includes twelve tranches tied to market cap and operational goals. These goals include 20 million vehicles delivered and 1 million Optimus robots. As of June 30, only the 20 million delivery target was considered probable. Tesla added 260,000 net FSD subscriptions in Q3, its best quarter. At that pace, reaching 10 million would take about eight years. Over the last year, the average was closer to 700,000 per year, suggesting a twelve-year timeline. The award remains valid until 2035.

The board approved this specific definition for the metric. It is now the company’s headline software statistic. While counting upfront buyers is not technically wrong, presenting the total as pure subscription momentum can be misleading. Investors are left without clarity on monthly recurring revenue. The 75% attach rate remains a strong claim, but retention data is missing. If that rate holds, it would represent a significant business engine. For now, Tesla knows the exact number of monthly payers but has not shared it with shareholders.
