Massive crowds of supporters gathered on Copacabana beach in Rio de Janeiro on Saturday, October 24, to back President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva ahead of the presidential runoff scheduled for the following day. The gathering took place on the final campaign day before voters head to the polls to decide between Lula and far-right challenger Flávio Bolsonaro.

The political contest remains extremely close. Flávio Bolsonaro secured 47% of the vote in the first round on October 4, compared to Lula's 45%, leaving the two candidates tied in current polling. Approximately 159 million Brazilians are eligible to vote in this election. While polling suggests a narrow margin, Lula would achieve an unprecedented feat by winning the runoff, as no candidate who trailed in the first round has won the presidency since democracy was restored in the 1980s.

Supporters clad in red filled the beach under bright sunlight, creating a vibrant atmosphere where activists displayed a large yellow and green banner. Some attendees expressed optimism about a significant margin of victory, though polling data does not project such a wide gap. Flávio Bolsonaro is widely regarded by analysts as holding a slight advantage, largely due to his promise to address violent crime aggressively. His father, former President Jair Bolsonaro, is currently serving a 27-year prison term for a coup plot related to the 2022 election, a circumstance that has elevated the stakes for many voters concerned about democratic stability.

In the days leading up to the vote, Lula has gained momentum following allegations reported by the magazine Piauí regarding his opponent. The publication reported that Flávio Bolsonaro attended a boat party with sex workers and vaccine lobbyists during the peak of the 2020 coronavirus outbreak while his father was in office. For some voters, the election reflects broader concerns about public health and past governance, with individuals citing personal losses during the pandemic.

Campaign activity was not limited to the supporters of the incumbent president. In Belo Horizonte, the capital of Minas Gerais, thousands gathered at Praça da Liberdade wearing yellow jerseys and waving flags. This state holds significant electoral importance, as no candidate has secured the presidency without carrying Minas Gerais, where Flávio Bolsonaro led by just under 5% in the first round.

The debate over public safety continues to drive voter sentiment. Supporters of Jair Bolsonaro's policies argue that loosening gun laws provided citizens with the right to self-defense, while security experts note that this policy also diverted firearms to criminal organizations. Lula has since tightened gun regulations. Conversely, Lula's base expresses concern regarding Flávio Bolsonaro's documented connections to paramilitary militias in Rio de Janeiro, doubting his ability to curb crime.

Organizers coordinated large groups of supporters, including a WhatsApp network with 10 million members, to mobilize voters for the final push. With both campaigns actively rallying their bases, the decision now rests with the electorate on Sunday.
