For professionals and small business owners, the way artificial intelligence handles daily work is changing with the arrival of Claude Duet. Unlike personal assistants that focus on leisure or simple errands, this new application from Anthropic is built specifically to manage professional workflows. It is available now as a mobile app for iOS and Android, as well as on the web for Pro and Max subscribers who join the research preview waitlist.

The launch marks a clear shift in the AI market. While the industry has been crowded with personal assistants for some time, the focus is moving toward agents that can actually work on a user's behalf. Anthropic is entering this space to compete with established rivals like Meta Muse, OpenAI Dots, Hark, Instinct, Grok Bot, and Fo. The company is positioning Duet as a tool for automating and managing complex tasks rather than just answering questions.

A key distinction for users is that Duet is not designed for personal errands. Anthropic explicitly notes that the agent is not suited for booking tickets or handling simple household chores. Furthermore, unlike some other agents, it does not display its browser activity in real-time. Instead, it operates behind the scenes to build daily briefings, create data dashboards, and suggest actions based on the user's existing information.

The technology operates by running tasks in a background virtual machine. This allows users to continue with their own work while the agent processes requests. It will only return to the user if a specific decision or approval is needed. This proactive approach means the system monitors ongoing tasks and delivers recommendations as they become relevant, rather than waiting for the user to ask for an update.

Under the hood, Duet is built on the Claude Opus 5.5 model. Its primary advantage lies in its connectivity, with access to over 6,000 connectors and plug-ins available in the Claude Marketplace. This extensive library allows it to integrate with a wide variety of professional tools. The agent can also facilitate online purchases using Stripe’s Link digital wallet or Shopify’s Shop Pay, though it is limited to these specific payment methods.

To manage risk, Anthropic has implemented strict boundaries on what the agent can do. Sensitive actions, such as making payments, require explicit user approval. The system is designed to prevent it from trading securities or moving money between bank accounts. Additionally, a new classifier checks every message to prevent sensitive data from leaking. By default, the agent will refuse requests that ask for credit card numbers or government identification details.

The broader context for this release is a market that is rapidly evolving beyond simple chatbots. Many of Anthropic's competitors are already focusing on business use cases. For instance, Meta offers a version of its Muse assistant tailored for small businesses with app connections, while OpenAI’s Dots integrates with professional tools. Duet aims to capture this segment by offering a specialized, work-oriented experience.

As the research preview rolls out, users will need to join a waitlist to access the service. The app is currently limited to Pro and Max customers. As the AI agent market matures, the ability to connect deep business workflows with secure, background processing will likely become a standard expectation for professional users.

For now, Claude Duet represents a bet on the idea that professionals want an AI partner that handles the busywork of their jobs. By focusing on business connections and secure background processing, Anthropic is differentiating its product from the wave of personal assistants that have dominated the news recently. The next steps will depend on how users respond to the new classifier and the scale of the integration marketplace.
