Apple’s first attempt at a wide foldable phone is facing early scrutiny over how the software manages its limited screen real estate. While hardware specifications often drive initial comparisons, user feedback suggests the operating system presents a more immediate usability challenge for owners of the new device.

The iPhone Duo features a 5.4-inch outer display. On this small surface, the iOS interface includes a permanent sidebar on the right side intended to simplify navigation. This design choice effectively removes approximately 15% of the available display area for primary content.

Allison Johnson of The Verge noted that the device feels harder to use with one hand compared to the Galaxy Z Fold 8. She observed that the taller, narrower physical shape of the Samsung phone makes its cover screen more accessible for single-handed operation. Johnson also pointed out that the iPhone Duo’s fixed dock creates a large, unused section of the display, limiting the space available for media and text.

A post on X illustrated the contrast between the two devices. The comparison showed that the iPhone Duo reserves a substantial portion of the outer screen for the navigation bar, whereas the Galaxy Z Fold 8 keeps that space open for content. Johnson noted that if the Samsung phone is configured to use a navigation bar instead of gestures, the difference appears less stark. However, for users relying on swipe gestures on the Z Fold 8, the wasted screen space is minimal.

Apple’s approach aims to treat the small display like a standard slab phone by shrinking the usable area to stretch media content vertically. In practice, this method reduces the horizontal space available for reading or viewing images. The Galaxy Z Fold 8 demonstrates an alternative strategy where the outer screen remains fully available for main content, avoiding the need for a dedicated navigation zone.

The iPhone Duo is currently available to consumers, though its stock remains limited. Samsung continues to report success with the Galaxy Z Fold 8, which benefits from years of refinement in how Android handles large and small screens. The iPhone Duo’s early user experience now hinges on whether buyers will accept the trade-off between a simplified navigation sidebar and a reduced viewing area.
