The gap between regulatory friction and financial momentum has never been wider for a single tech company.

Just forty-eight hours after Washington ordered federal civilian agencies to purge DeepSeek’s artificial intelligence tools from their networks, the Chinese startup announced a capital raise of roughly $15 billion. This sum, equivalent to about 100 billion yuan, marks one of the largest funding events in the nation's history. The move places the company at the center of a global contest for algorithmic supremacy, despite the immediate pressure applied by its largest market rival.

The path to this week’s announcement has been rapid and steep. DeepSeek was founded in 2023 by Liang Wenfeng, a former co-founder of the quantitative hedge fund High-Flyer, which provided the initial financial backbone for the venture. The lab first captured global attention in early 2025 when it released a free, open-weight reasoning model that challenged the prevailing dominance of American AI firms. Following that surge in popularity, the company closed a significant investment round in June, securing more than $7 billion at a valuation of $50 billion. By July, reports indicated the firm was seeking an additional $1.5 billion at a valuation near $71 billion, with discussions already underway regarding a potential initial public offering in China as early as next year.

The new influx of cash is expected to fuel an aggressive expansion strategy. DeepSeek is increasing its expenditure on AI infrastructure and the development of open models, targeting both domestic and international users. This push comes at a time when the startup is navigating new restrictions in the United States. The company’s growth trajectory may also sharpen the competitive edge against local rivals, forcing other Chinese AI firms to accelerate their own development cycles to keep pace.

This latest round is part of a broader trend of massive capital injections into the AI sector worldwide. Chinese competitors have also attracted substantial sums in recent months. Moonshot AI, the developer behind the Kimi assistant, secured $2 billion in May at a $20 billion valuation. Earlier this month, Manus AI raised over $500 million. In the public markets, Zhipu AI and MiniMax, both of which listed in Hong Kong in January, currently hold market capitalizations of approximately $29 billion and $7.2 billion, respectively.

The ownership structure of DeepSeek remains heavily concentrated. Corporate data analyzed by WireScreen shows that Liang Wenfeng retains an estimated 81.6% stake in the company’s Chinese operating entity, a position maintained even after the previous funding events. This control allows the founder to steer the long-term strategic direction of the lab as it navigates its complex global environment.

Potential backers for the new round include major Chinese tech and industrial players. Bloomberg reports that CATL, a leading battery manufacturer, and Tencent, the corporation behind WeChat, are among the entities considered for investment. Their participation signals broad confidence in DeepSeek’s ability to sustain its technical lead.

As the company prepares for its next phase of growth, the focus will remain on scaling its open-model ecosystem and reinforcing its infrastructure capabilities. The recent regulatory actions in the U.S. have highlighted the geopolitical stakes involved in AI deployment, yet the financial support suggests that investors view these challenges as manageable hurdles rather than deal-breakers.

DeepSeek did not immediately respond to requests for comment regarding the new funding round or its future plans.
