A prototype cartridge of Pokémon Red for the Nintendo Game Boy has entered the auction market with a single bid of $25,000. The item dates to the game's original release in 1998 and was first identified by the collector site Retro Dodo. Goldin, the auction house handling the sale, has listed the item as a previously undocumented development board.

Specialists at PSA authenticated the physical cartridge. Their technical analysis revealed that they could only read the first 32KB of the data, a limitation they described as technically unique. PSA stated that the readable portion is completely identical to the U.S. retail version. The company expressed confidence that the remaining unreadable data also matches the commercial release. The report noted two minor differences in the ROM header data, specifically an incorrect Mask ROM version value and a resulting checksum change. Neither difference affects gameplay.

The cartridge bears a custom sticker reading DMB-MBC-16M-FLASH along with the part number DMG-(F)KGDB-01. PSA interprets DMB as Dot Matrix Game, the internal codename for the Game Boy, and MBC as Memory Bank Controller. The 16M designation likely refers to 16 megabits of flash-writable memory. This custom chip allowed developers to exceed the standard 32KB ROM limit of the original hardware. The physical unit is longer than a standard retail cartridge.

Records from the Rare Gaming Dump wiki list the same part number for a 2000 development cartridge that used a 16-megabit Sharp flash chip. Images from that entry show a similar design, though the sticker text differs slightly. The wiki entry provides historical context for the specific hardware components found in this auction item. The presence of the same part number suggests a continuity in development tooling across different years.

Pokémon Red launched alongside Green and Blue in the 1990s and helped establish the global franchise. The combined sales of Red and Blue are reported to exceed 31 million copies. The current auction listing notes that several days remain before the bidding closes. The final price may increase if other collectors participate before the deadline. A reader comment on the initial report suggested this specific unit is a master copy that can be powered on and played, a claim that has not yet been independently verified.

The auction process involves verifying the physical integrity and digital content of the game cartridge. PSA’s role is to provide a technical report on the data structure and hardware identifiers. The $25,000 bid reflects the current market interest in early development hardware from a major gaming franchise. The item remains available for further bids until the auction concludes.
