Apple's new foldable iPhone Duo is available for purchase, but fully utilizing its core functions requires an additional $249 in hardware. The device ships with a USB-C cable and lacks a power adapter, while the software update for stylus support has not yet been released to the public.
The most expensive missing component is the Apple Pencil (USB-C), priced at $69 after a recent discount from $79. This stylus enables handwriting and sketching on both the inner and outer screens. Apple stated the design mimics the proportions of a standard A-series paper notebook. The feature is scheduled to arrive in the iOS 27.2 update next week.
Fast charging capabilities are also gated behind a separate purchase. The phone can reach 50 percent battery in approximately 20 minutes, but only when connected to a sufficiently powerful adapter. Tech reviewers recommend the Apple 40W Dynamic Power Adapter, currently $34, or an Anker 100W USB-C charger at $29. These options ensure the device reaches its advertised charging speed.
The total cost for these two essential items is $108. However, the full $249 figure includes recommended accessories for navigation and home monitoring. A MagSafe car mount from ESR costs $19, allowing users to pair the phone with CarPlay for mapping. The Duo's larger display is expected to improve the visibility of step-by-step directions on the device screen.
Additional costs arise from cases and security cameras. Third-party cases range from $29 to $39, while Apple's own Folio with Kickstand costs $129. The phone's new StandBy mode allows users to view security cameras without charging. To use this feature, buyers must purchase HomeKit-compatible devices, such as the $39 Aqara G100 camera or the $69 eufy 4K model.
These accessory costs sit on top of the base price of the iPhone Duo. The device represents Apple's first entry into the foldable market. The current accessory list reflects immediate needs for power, input, and connectivity that are not included in the standard box.
The iOS 27.2 update is the next major step for owners. Until that update is installed, the stylus functionality remains unavailable. The hardware, however, is ready for immediate use with the current software version.
