Manchester City surrendered its perfect start to the Premier League season with a 2-1 loss at Aston Villa on Saturday. The result ends a record-breaking run in which Enzo Maresca had won his first seven matches in charge of a new club.

The match began with a defensive lapse that gave Villa an early advantage. Marc Guehi committed a heavy touch, allowing Nicolas Jackson to steal the ball. Jackson cut inside Elliott Anderson and fired a high shot past goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma to lead 1-0 in the sixth minute.

City controlled possession for much of the first half but faced resistance from Villa goalkeeper Zion Suzuki. Suzuki denied shots from Iliman Ndiaye, Rayan Cherki, and Abdukodir Khusanov. Ndiaye also struck the post before the break, keeping the score at 1-0.

The deadlock broke in the 52nd minute. Erling Haaland headed in a cross from Ndiaye to level the game. This was Haaland's 13th goal in his last 10 appearances for the club. Josko Gvardiol attempted to put City ahead moments later, but Suzuki deflected a powerful drive onto the crossbar.

Villa restored their lead in the 60th minute. Ibrahim Mbaye found space behind the City defense and crossed the ball to Jackson. Jackson placed a low shot into the net, a finish that should have been stopped by Donnarumma. City pushed for a second equalizer but failed to find a way past the Villa defense.

The defeat places pressure on City ahead of the remainder of the weekend. Arsenal can move level with City on points at the top of the table if they defeat Everton at home later on Saturday. For Villa, the win marks its sixth victory in seven games across all competitions. The result moves the club to sixth place in the standings.

The performance reflects changes made during the transfer window. Unai Emery has rebuilt his squad after six players who started last season's Europa League final departed. New signings Jackson, Suzuki, Mbaye, and Johan Manzambi have contributed to a recent improvement in form. City continues to appeal a guilty verdict on over 100 charges of financial rule breaking between 2009 and 2018, with potential sanctions including relegation.
