5 days on: MP Helen Haines out of critical care after car strike

The Alfred Hospital in Melbourne confirmed on Saturday morning that the condition of Independent MP Helen Haines has moved from critical to serious but stable. This marks the first reported improvement since she was airlifted to the facility five days ago.

Haines, 65, was struck by a car outside her electorate office in Wangaratta, north-east Victoria, on Monday. Authorities state the vehicle deliberately hit her. As a result of the impact, medical staff amputated both of her legs.

Her husband, Phil Haines, described the event as a horrendous incident on Wednesday. He stated that while her physical injuries are severe, her heart and mind remain in good shape.

Brendan Nugent, 43, was arrested shortly after the collision. Police allege he drove a Toyota LandCruiser into the MP. He has appeared in court facing three charges: dangerous driving causing serious injury, intentionally causing serious injury, and causing harm to a Commonwealth public official.

Nugent’s lawyer told the court that his client had mental health concerns but provided no specific details. Victoria Police and the Australian Federal Police are continuing their joint investigation. They have not yet established a motive and are examining whether drug use or medication played a role. Nugent’s family says they were long-time friends of Haines.

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese told ABC television that Australia has seen a rise in temperature and too much shouting. Haines entered parliament in 2019 after working as a nurse and midwife. She is known for supporting stronger climate action.
