Front-line personnel in Ukraine have regained access to high-speed satellite connectivity as of this week. The restoration of full bandwidth for the Starlink network and the Starshield system marks the end of a disruption that lasted more than a week. For troops relying on digital infrastructure, the change means the immediate return of capabilities essential for daily operations and combat coordination.

President Volodymyr Zelenskyy confirmed the return to normal service levels on Saturday. He stated that the restoration began overnight and that speeds are now at the required levels. The Defense Ministry verified the improvement through its monitoring systems. Connectivity is holding stable at speeds above 250 miles per hour. This is a significant increase from the restricted rate of roughly 100 miles per hour that had been in place previously.

The ministry noted that the lower speed cap had created operational challenges. Specifically, it hindered efforts to intercept incoming drones and disrupted various military missions. Starlink serves as a critical backbone for Ukraine’s defense against the Russian invasion. The network supports drone operations, logistics such as moving food and water to soldiers, and general communications along the front. Zelenskyy also highlighted its role in protecting against Iranian-made Shahed drones.

Defense Minister Yevhen Khmara attributed the fix to direct dialogue led by the president. He emphasized that the result is vital for service members and drone operators. Zelenskyy publicly thanked U.S. officials, including members of Congress, the State Department, and President Donald Trump, for their role in the process. The quick resolution helps stabilize the technological infrastructure that underpins the current military strategy.

The cause of the initial slowdown had created friction between Kyiv and Washington. Ukrainian officials believed the U.S. government was responsible for the restrictions, claiming SpaceX acted on a message from American authorities. Elon Musk supported this view by writing that the U.S. government owns and controls Starshield. He noted that limits on speed or usage are decided by the U.S. military and ultimately the president.

The Trump administration has denied direct interference in Ukraine’s access to the service. President Trump told reporters on Friday that he would not reveal who ordered the restrictions, stating he would not say if he knew. He also defended SpaceX CEO Elon Musk, describing him as a fair person who never does anything wrong. This diplomatic ambiguity remains even as the technical issue is resolved.

The recovery of satellite speeds coincides with a renewed push for peace talks. Russia has agreed to a trilateral meeting with Ukraine and the United States next month. The two sides have also settled on a localized ceasefire in the Russian-occupied city of Oleshky. The White House credited First Lady Melania Trump with brokering the deal, which includes humanitarian aid and civilian evacuation. Fighting continues elsewhere, with recent strikes on a chemical plant in Russia and a residential building in Kyiv.
