France is grappling with a surge in anti Muslim sentiment while investigating a deadly shooting in a Paris suburb that officials have labeled a terrorist crime. The attack occurred on Friday in the northern suburbs of the capital, where a lone gunman targeted working class communities with large immigrant populations.

The rampage began at approximately 10:30 a.m. local time. The suspect, a 39 year old man identified as Kevin T., drove through the towns of Trappes and La Verriere. He fired an automatic weapon at three specific locations: a petrol station, a medical center, and a children's playground. Police intervened and arrested the suspect after roughly 15 minutes of sustained gunfire.

One person died in the attack. French media identified the victim as Pengo Bassio Wangi, a young Black man. Five others were wounded, including a 12 year old girl who suffered serious injuries. Prosecutors stated that three of the five injured individuals are in critical condition. The girl, who is of North African descent and was wearing a headscarf at the time, was shot eight times. Her mother said the child was transported to a children's hospital for surgery.

Local MP Laurent Mazaury reported that the suspect told officers he wanted to kill foreigners. Mazaury described the attacker as a racist. French media noted that one of the wounded women was also wearing a headscarf. Interior Minister Laurent Nunez confirmed that investigations are ongoing but stated that the incident is clearly a terrorist crime. Prosecutors are currently examining whether the suspect conspired with a terrorist group. A member of the suspect's immediate family has also been taken into custody.

Investigators discovered an older style semiautomatic weapon from the World War II era in the suspect's vehicle. Tear gas grenades were also found in the car. Prime Minister Sebastien Lecornu described the case as very serious and said all security and judicial resources are fully mobilized. President Emmanuel Macron termed the incident a racist terrorist attack and a turning point for the nation. He said France remains determined to fight racism in all its forms.

Trappes Mayor Ali Rabeh, who has Moroccan roots, said the gunman fired at random and aimed to cause a bloodbath. Rabeh called the attack objectively racist and probably Islamophobic. He stated that the victims could have been his own relatives and said the wounded girl's crime was probably being of color. The girl's mother told broadcaster RTL that she questioned whether her daughter was targeted because of her headscarf. She emphasized that the girl was born in Trappes and has the right to build her life in France.

The shooting coincides with ongoing cost of living and student protests across the country. Authorities plan to deploy 70,000 police officers on Saturday to manage expected demonstrations. Some far right voices have blamed Muslim youths for the unrest. Marine Le Pen, leader of the National Rally, condemned the shooting as barbaric. Muslim groups accused the populist right of fostering hatred through Islamophobic rhetoric. They pointed to Le Pen's proposal to fine women who wear the headscarf in public during her presidential campaign.

Rabeh said politicians who make negative comments about Muslims are criminals. The French Muslim Council blamed promoters of anti Muslim hate speech, saying they have blood on their hands. Monitors report that anti Muslim hostility is growing. The European Parliament passed a resolution last week by a vote of 381 to 167 with 15 abstentions. The resolution calls for an EU strategy against Islamist entryism and the Muslim Brotherhood network. Farid Hafez, a researcher at Georgetown University's Bridge Initiative, called the vote a major symbolic victory for anti Muslim forces.

Amnesty International stated in June that Islamophobic violence in the United Kingdom had reached emergency levels. The EU's Fundamental Rights Agency reports that one in two Muslims in Europe face racial discrimination. In the United States, California's attorney general reported that anti Muslim hate crimes rose 54 percent in 2025, increasing from 24 incidents to 38.
