The office of First Lady Melania Trump announced on Friday that she has secured a temporary ceasefire for the Russian-occupied Ukrainian city of Oleshky. The six-day pause in military action is scheduled to begin on Thursday, October 29. The stated goal is to allow humanitarian aid into the city and facilitate the evacuation of civilians through a designated safe route.

The announcement attributes the arrangement exclusively to the first lady, rather than President Donald Trump or other senior officials. Her office stated that she acted in the formal capacity of Exclusive Intermediary. According to the release, she worked directly with leadership from both nations to define the terms, timing, and technical procedures for the localized truce.

Mrs. Trump described the conditions in Oleshky as dire. She said the city is a front-line war zone on the brink of disaster. The remaining population consists primarily of elderly residents who require medical care, food, and clean water. She noted that residents face limited electricity, mined roads, and regular military attacks. She claimed that without her intervention, bringing in aid and evacuating the elderly would have been impossible.

Neither Russia nor Ukraine has issued a public comment on the announcement. Ukrainian officials indicated that a tentative agreement has been reached for the occupied territory. Under the plan, non-military civilian leaders from both countries will visit residents to assess their needs. Those wishing to leave will receive coordinated transportation to a destination of their choice. Mrs. Trump said some residents may choose to go to Russia while others go to Ukraine.

The first lady’s office said she arranged for an American media organization to document the work of the Russian and Ukrainian teams. Newsmax, a conservative outlet, confirmed it would participate. White House communications director Steven Cheung called the development amazing news. He posted on X that it was a major positive step towards peace and stated that history will remember her tireless work.

The announcement follows a call between Pope Leo and Russian President Vladimir Putin last week. The pope expressed concern about the humanitarian situation in Oleshky during that conversation. Mrs. Trump has also worked to reunite 34 children with their families after Russia forcibly removed them.

The ceasefire comes amid stalled efforts by President Trump to end the war. He has grown frustrated with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy in recent days. Earlier this week, Trump told reporters that Russia has been fine on Ukraine and that they have not been doing much.
