German authorities detained an 18-year-old man in Hamburg on Thursday on suspicion of causing the death of a 14-year-old girl in Indiana. The Hamburg public prosecutor's office announced the action on Friday, citing a tip from the Federal Bureau of Investigation.
Prosecutors charge the suspect with being an indirect perpetrator of murder and grievous bodily harm. They allege he belonged to an online group named Nefarious Maniac Kult, or NMK, which is part of a larger global network called COM. Between September and October, while he was 17, he allegedly used Discord to exert influence over the Indiana girl, whom prosecutors described as psychologically fragile.
The suspect is accused of pressuring the girl to cut herself and write the letters NMK on a wall using her own blood. She reportedly sent him video recordings of these acts. A few days later, she hanged herself in her bedroom. Prosecutors said the suspect subsequently sought a video of her death, hoping it would increase his standing within the group or help him gain entry.
FBI Indianapolis Special Agent in Charge Timothy J. O'Malley stated his office collaborated with the Fort Wayne Police Department to provide German police with information that advanced the arrest. The Fort Wayne Police Department said its Homicide Unit identified the suspect as a contributor to the juvenile's death.
"Anyone who targets or exploits a child should understand this: There is no safe haven from justice," O'Malley said. "It doesn't matter where you live or where you try to hide. The FBI will work with our partners around the world to find you and hold you accountable."
The FBI reports a 300% increase in nihilistic violent extremism cases from September 2024 to September 2025. Many of these cases involve a group known as 764. FBI Director Kash Patel noted that 764 lacks a specific ideology but its members openly encourage self-harm and violence. The group also urges victims to produce videos documenting self-harm or child sexual abuse material.
